THE WINNER After careful consideration, the design that we believe has most strongly represented the competition criteria, with the most innovative and creative design for El Pantà de Sau Mini Challenge is: Nymph by the Water by Team Fiat Lux Team Fiat Lux flipped the idea of what a meditation space could look like and how it can interact with this special setting. The design captures the essence of the reservoir and reflects the local activities carried out in this unique area — all summed up in a single image. PROJECT DESCRIPTION We have noticed that the local residents had a very good interaction with the church — they often took boats and frolicked beside the church. There is no doubt that the church has become a part of the spirit of place and a part of the collective unconsciousness of residents. Therefore, our design concept comes from "boat", which is a tool for local residents to interact with the church. We also hope to reduce the interference of the new building to the church, rather than replacing it with a new building. So we designed a “ship building”, it provides a space for us to meditate. It has the following excellent qualities: During the high water level of the reservoir, it became a substitute for the meditation function of the church. More importantly, its function will not be affected by the rise and fall of water level. Because being undisturbed by others is a good quality of a meditation space, each space of the building should serves only a few people as much as possible. By increasing the number of ship buildings, enough people can be served. The construction of ships is always faster and easier than other stone buildings. There is no doubt that the materials used to make ship buildings, namely wood, are also quite environmentally friendly. At the same time, we also believe that the scale and materials of the ship building make it harmonious with the surrounding landscape Team Fiat Lux. Our Visitor centre and Retreat for the Blind ask for a unique, dynamic piece of architecture that provides a tactile and sensory journey for those who are visually impaired. THE SITE Iceland's unique and unforgettable geography is defined by volcanic mountain peaks and ice fields, with a coastline marked by fjords (deep shafts marked by glaciers) and black beaches. Reynisfjara beach is Iceland's most famous and most visited black volcanic beach, located in the southern part of the island, near the small village of Vik. It is one of the most popular locations in Iceland due to its black sand and its contrast with the white snow and ice in winter, violent waves, and basalt formations. The combination of these factors makes Reynisfjara beach one of the most beautiful examples of Iceland's rough geography. 1st PRIZE THE WHALE Vladislav Rakitin Winner Sau THE WINNING DESIGN SCHEME THE WHALE The Black Sand Beach has a very unusual atmosphere. Sharp rocks, black sand, large waves and basalt columns give the place a primitive, ascetic and mysterious spirit. Such a cold atmosphere scares and attracts tourists at the same time. Only in such places can a person feel like a primitive man who was left alone with nature. This is the main feeling that the project wants to convey to tourists. The rocky walls and warm light in the interior create the atmosphere of a cave house, and the black polished metal embodies the future evolution of mankind. Panoramic glazing and transparent pylons erase the boundary between the indoor and outdoor environment. This allows you to combine the interior with nature, to give visitors a complete immersion in the environment. Smooth metal and embossed walls give a tactile connection to the visually impaired, which helps them feel the space. There are also ledges on the floor for them, which facilitate orientation and movement in the center. Tactile plaques with relief drawings are located around the pavilion. This makes it possible for the blind to imagine the surrounding natural landscapes and the image of the pavilion. Therefore, the image of the center has a simple form. Iceland is known not only for its unique nature, but also for amazing animals. Some such animals are an integral part of Icelandic culture. One of these animals is a whale, the image of which is used in architecture. The basis of the building layout is a ramp. This creates more convenient movement not only for the blind, but also for people with limited mobility. Also, the ramp facilitates orientation in the building, since all the premises of the center are visible from it. There is a cafe at the head of the building. Since there are strong tides on the beach, it is impossible to place the building close to the water. Therefore, the floor of the cafe is sunk into the ground to visually bring the cafe closer to the water. The remaining rooms are located in the underground floor. There is a museum under the cafe, which continues in a two-light space. The exhibits can also be viewed from above by walking along the ramp. The dining room is located in a separate part.
