REIMAGINING ABANDONED QUARRIES Choose a Site Location International Design Competitions Reimagining Disused Quarry Competitions We invite architects, landscape designers, and environmental enthusiasts to participate in this set of competitions to restore an abandoned stone quarry and contribute to the healing of this industrial scar on our world’s natural landscape. Your innovative designs can breathe new life into the site, making it a symbol of environmental restoration and conservation. The primary goal is to revitalise the site by encouraging native ecosystems and habitats to return, while creating a harmonious coexistence between nature and humans using one, or all, of our three competition briefs, outlining the design for a Concert Hall, a full Revitalising Landscaping proposal and a Biophilic Pavillion, all located within the quarry of your choice. For all of our quarry competitions, you have the option to choose your own site location or one of the site locations that we have provided. If you are choosing your own site, it must be a disused, open stone quarry that has had no post industrial intervention, or a quarry that is currently in use and will benefit from your proposal once the material extraction has been exhausted. If you have a site in mind but are unsure whether it is suitable, you can contact us via info@larsenliverpool.com and we would be very happy to discuss this with you. We have provided the option to use one of three different stone quarries from around the United Kingdom, located in protected Natural Parks. You may select any one of these sites to use as the basis of your project. Our Site Analysis Package includes 3D topography and Photographs of each of the sites. Disused quarries can have a detrimental effect on the landscape, destroying large areas of natural habitats. Your objective for these projects is to create a detailed proposal for the revitalisation of a quarry that can act as a catalyst to encourage similar interventions worldwide, with an emphasis on sustainable design, wildlife conservation and a comprehensive landscaping scheme with native flora. Let your creativity blossom. Button gallery GALLERY QUARRY COMPETITION BRIEFS All Quarry Competitions are included in a single payment. SCANDINAVIAN FJORDS ESCAPE & FLOATING SAUNA NÆRØYFJORD UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE Aurland, Norway International Design Competitions SCANDINAVIAN ESCAPE & FLOATING SAUNA Scandinavia's fjords were carved by glaciers over millions of years, resulting in these iconic landscapes with steep cliffs and deep waterways. Nærøyfjord is one of Norway’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognised for their outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance - the place that inspired the cinematic creation of Frozen's Arendelle. We have designed these competition briefs to take advantage of this dramatic landscape and encourage you to be creative in your designs and develop new, pioneering architectural concepts within this incredible, natural site. All proposals are expected to demonstrate a clear architectural response to the brief, considering a high level of sustainability and wildlife conservation with a minimal impact structure that has a light touch within the landscape while benefiting the ecology of the area. As demonstrated by the surrounding ancient settlements, humans once lived in harmony with their surroundings, benefitting from the earth without destroying it. This is a step towards shaping the future of architecture. Are you up to the challenge? Button gallery GALLERY FJORDS COMPETITION BRIEFS All Fjords Competitions are included in a single payment. Test your design abilities and elevate your portfolio as you embark on an architectural journey like no other. Introducing our extraordinary competition – a proposal to imagine a haven of solace amidst the awe-inspiring embrace of the fjords. Picture an oasis of serenity, hidden away from the world, where visitors discover respite, gain the vital tools to conquer life's challenges and reconnect with the nature around them. Choose your own subject topic . The escape should be designed specifically for a targeted group of users of your choice. This could be a supportive and safe learning environment for new parents to connect with their babies, a rehabilitation centre for those struggling with physical issues or a supportive care environment for those suffering from dementia or grief. The possibilities are endless. As architects, your task is to conceive a fully sustainable, environmentally conscious holistic retreat that merges seamless seclusion with nurturing support and takes precedent from the nearby Viking Village. A bountiful kitchen garden should form the heart of your design, flourishing amidst the fjords’ grandeur, nurturing both body and soul. This is where food therapy and aromatherapy intertwine, where architectural brilliance meets transformative rejuvenation. Dare to conceive a world that takes design beyond what the eye can see - the safety and comfort of a hidden sanctuary for those in need. Our vision is to create an architectural marvel that not only offers an unparalleled sensory experience but also grounds itself in this dramatic and inspiring landscape through the choice of design and materiality. The Scandinavian fjords have long captivated hearts with their rugged beauty and serene mystique. GREEK SETTLEMENT SELF SUSTAINING ECO VILLAGE DESIGN EMPORDÀ WETLANDS Costa Brava, Spain International Design Competitions ELS AIGUAMOLLS DE L'EMPORDA THE EMPORDA WETLANDS our most ambitious project yet with over £10,000 in awards Empordà takes its name from Empúries, the first Ancient Greek settlement in the Iberian peninsula, located just south of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà or the "Emporda Wetlands". The Emporda Wetlands are one of the most important wetland habitats in Spain. They are rich in biodiversity and have been heavily impacted by tourism and construction in the last few decades. We believe humans and nature can both coexist and benefit each other. This is why we have designed our most ambitious set of competitions yet, where we explore how humans should live within and alongside nature. We expect all proposals to consider not only minimal-impact designs and sustainable construction methods, but also demonstrate a self-sufficient and eco positive lifestyle that benefits the surrounding environment. This is your chance to shine. Start your self-sustainability journey now. Button gallery GALLERY EMPORDÀ COMPETITION BRIEFS All Empordà Competitions are included in a single payment. This design challenge asks for a fully self-sustaining eco village that will sit peacefully within the site and allow both humans and nature to share the same space and revolutionises the way we live - providing a fully independent and minimal impact lifestyle, while retaining the comforts and technologies of modern day life. The challenge is to work with this incredible landscape to produce lightweight and undetectable buildings that bond humans and nature. We expect to see environmentally-conscious structures that set a precedent for what sustainable architecture should look like. We expect you to consider every aspect of the design and building process: the materials to be used, their sourcing, how they will be taken to the site, how the buildings will be erected without disturbing the local nature, how the village will be self-sustaining, how the village will benefit the surrounding nature. beautiful site biodiversity coastline floodplains habitat preservation landscape design masterplanning mountains nature reserve passive design resource conservation stunning visuals sustainable design unique landscape urban planning wetlands wildlife conservation 1st Prize £3,000 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement 2nd Prize £1,000 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement 3rd Prize £500 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Public Favourite £500 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Honourable Mentions £100 in Competition Vouchers Publication and promotion All entries will be published and promoted across our global platforms. add Eco Village to cart add Empordà Bundle to cart Empordà Agora - Town Hall Competition Challenge: The Town Hall should contain a communal, multifunctional space, an information/visitor point and a small cafe. The idea of this competition is to create a unique, site-specific design that responds to this special setting and the natural changes that occur within. The building will be made up of a communal, multifunctional space capable of hosting markets, school groups, small theatre and music productions and political and cultural gatherings, as well as a variety of other community interest activities. It will also contain an information/visitor point and a small cafe selling local produce. This competition takes inspiration from the nearby Ancient Greek settlement of Empúries. The name Empordà is a derivative of Empúries meaning "the markets" and the Agora, in ancient Greek cities, a meeting space for various community activities. The proposed building should be a combination of these ancient ideologies and hold an architectural interest in its own right as an individual and memorable space, capable of attracting visitors from outside the immediate community to venture inside and take part in any local activities. A good design must focus on the functionality of the architecture and interact with the natural flora and fauna, blurring the lines between outside and inside, connecting visitors to nature within this incredible, utopian setting. ancient settlement cafe design cultural heritage cultural inclusion eco-friendly public architecture event space indoor market innovative design masterplanning political events public area sustainable design theatre design urban planning visitor centre 1st Prize £1,000 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement 2nd Prize £500 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Public Favourite £100 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Honourable Mentions £50 in Competition Vouchers Publication and promotion All entries will be published and promoted across our global platforms. add Town Hall to cart add Empordà Bundle to cart Empordà Domus - Floating Eco House Competition Challenge: to design a floating house, which can be incorporated in the Self-Sufficient Eco Village Competition. A successful design will demonstrate how the specifics of the site have been considered, including the rise and fall of the water and how this will be achieved without stopping the flooding and therefore impacting the ecology of the landscape. We are looking for a groundbreaking and unprecedented concept for a new way of living with a design that promotes sustainable, minimal impact architecture that meets its social purpose and combines a less straining, primitive lifestyle with the comfort and convenience of modern day technologies. The form of the structure is open to interpretation, and we encourage designers to be creative and think of innovative solutions to the question of ‘how do we live?’. biodiversity challenging architecture coastline ecology floating architecture floating building floodplains house design interior design minimal impact mountains resource conservation sustainable living vernacular housing wetlands 1st Prize £500 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement 2nd Prize £200 in GBP Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Public Favourite Free 1-year subscription to Larsen UNLIMITED (worth £199) Certificate of Achievement Honourable Mentions £30 in Competition Vouchers Publication and promotion All entries will be published and promoted across our global platforms. add Floating Eco House to cart add Empordà Bundle to cart Site Analysis SITE ANALYSIS, TOPOGRAPHY & PHOTOGRAPHS Exclusive package including: Additional images & videos Project criteria & details Local Routes & Site information Flora & Faunal information 3D CAD Topography add Site Analysis to cart add Empordà Bundle to cart UNLIMITED - Lifetime Competition Access £20,000+ International Design Review Video Call Open to Students & Professionals See All Project Briefs UNLIMITED members receive exclusive lifetime access to ALL Larsen Liverpool content: competitions, premium content, site analysis, certificates of participation, and much more. + a free one-to-one design review video call. All access, all competitions, one single payment. • What is greenwashing?

Articles Back to all articles Architectural Design Concepts What is greenwashing? Greenwashing is the practice of making deceptive claims about a product or company's environmental benefits to appear more environmentally friendly than it is. It's a significant issue as it can mislead consumers and undermine genuine sustainability efforts. To avoid greenwashing, consumers can look for third-party certifications, scrutinize claims for vague language like 'eco-friendly' without specific details, and research the company's overall environmental practices. Checking for a company's sustainability reports and its reputation in independent assessments can also be helpful. Being informed and critical of claims is crucial as greenwashing not only misleads consumers but also diverts support from truly sustainable initiatives. • How do architectural styles reflect cultural and historical contexts?

Articles Back to all articles Architectural Design Concepts How do architectural styles reflect cultural and historical contexts? Architectural styles are deeply influenced by the cultural, technological, and historical context in which they develop. For instance, classical architecture with its strict symmetry and order reflected the ancient Greeks' and Romans' emphasis on harmony and proportion. Gothic architecture, with its soaring heights and intricate details, was made possible by advances in engineering and reflected the era's religious fervour. The Renaissance's return to classical principles mirrored a broader cultural revival of ancient philosophies and arts. Modernism, with its focus on function and simplicity, emerged from a desire to break with the past and embrace the industrial age's new possibilities. Each style embodies the values, technologies, and societal structures of its time, providing a window into the people and cultures that created them. As such, the study of architectural styles is not just about aesthetics or building techniques, but about understanding the broader human experience they represent.
