- Emporda Wetlands Eco Village | Architecture Competition
This architectural competition challenges the most experienced of designers to create a self-sustaining village in the Mediterranean coast of Girona. 1/3 SELF-SUSTAINING ECO VILLAGE, TOWN HALL & FLOATING ECO HOUSE EMPORDÀ GREEK ECO VILLAGE COMPETITIONS Get competition files SUSTAINABLE ECO VILLAGE Empordà takes its name from Empúries, the first Ancient Greek settlement in the Iberian peninsula, located just south of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà or the "Emporda Wetlands". The Emporda Wetlands are one of the most important wetland habitats in Spain. They are rich in biodiversity and have been heavily impacted by tourism and construction in the last few decades. We believe humans and nature can both coexist and benefit each other. This is why we have designed our most ambitious set of competitions yet, where we explore how humans should live within and alongside nature. We expect all proposals to consider not only minimal-impact designs and sustainable construction methods, but also demonstrate a self-sufficient and eco positive lifestyle that benefits the surrounding environment. This is your chance to shine. Start your self-sustainability journey now. VIEW THE WINNING DESIGNS Button gallery EMPORDÀ BRIEFS Create a single image, visual, drawing that best illustrates your proposal for each the Eco-Village within the wetlands of Empordà. Using the briefs that are given, describe to us how this village will look and how you imagine the eco-village within just a single image! Use this mini challenge to test your creativity, practice visual software skills and expand your portfolio. 1. Self-Sustaining Eco Village 2. Town Hall 3. Floating Eco House 4. Site Analysis UNLIMITED Competitions Empordà Polis - Self-Sustaining Eco Village Competition Challenge: to design a self-sufficient eco village in the protected wetlands of Empordà. This design challenge asks for a fully self-sustaining eco village that will sit peacefully within the site and allow both humans and nature to share the same space and revolutionises the way we live - providing a fully independent and minimal impact lifestyle, while retaining the comforts and technologies of modern day life. The challenge is to work with this incredible landscape to produce lightweight and undetectable buildings that bond humans and nature. We expect to see environmentally-conscious structures that set a precedent for what sustainable architecture should look like. We expect you to consider every aspect of the design and building process: the materials to be used, their sourcing, how they will be taken to the site, how the buildings will be erected without disturbing the local nature, how the village will be self-sustaining, how the village will benefit the surrounding nature. beautiful site biodiversity coastline floodplains habitat preservation landscape design masterplanning mountains nature reserve passive design resource conservation stunning visuals sustainable design unique landscape urban planning wetlands wildlife conservation Get competition files Empordà Agora - Town Hall Competition Challenge: The Town Hall should contain a communal, multifunctional space, an information/visitor point and a small cafe. The idea of this competition is to create a unique, site-specific design that responds to this special setting and the natural changes that occur within. The building will be made up of a communal, multifunctional space capable of hosting markets, school groups, small theatre and music productions and political and cultural gatherings, as well as a variety of other community interest activities. It will also contain an information/visitor point and a small cafe selling local produce. This competition takes inspiration from the nearby Ancient Greek settlement of Empúries. The name Empordà is a derivative of Empúries meaning "the markets" and the Agora, in ancient Greek cities, a meeting space for various community activities. The proposed building should be a combination of these ancient ideologies and hold an architectural interest in its own right as an individual and memorable space, capable of attracting visitors from outside the immediate community to venture inside and take part in any local activities. A good design must focus on the functionality of the architecture and interact with the natural flora and fauna, blurring the lines between outside and inside, connecting visitors to nature within this incredible, utopian setting. ancient settlement cafe design cultural heritage cultural inclusion eco-friendly public architecture event space indoor market innovative design masterplanning political events public area sustainable design theatre design urban planning visitor centre Get competition files Empordà Domus - Floating Eco House Competition Challenge: to design a floating house, which can be incorporated in the Self-Sufficient Eco Village Competition. A successful design will demonstrate how the specifics of the site have been considered, including the rise and fall of the water and how this will be achieved without stopping the flooding and therefore impacting the ecology of the landscape. We are looking for a groundbreaking and unprecedented concept for a new way of living with a design that promotes sustainable, minimal impact architecture that meets its social purpose and combines a less straining, primitive lifestyle with the comfort and convenience of modern day technologies. The form of the structure is open to interpretation, and we encourage designers to be creative and think of innovative solutions to the question of ‘how do we live?’. biodiversity challenging architecture coastline ecology floating architecture floating building floodplains house design interior design minimal impact mountains resource conservation sustainable living vernacular housing wetlands Get competition files Site Analysis SITE ANALYSIS, TOPOGRAPHY & PHOTOGRAPHS Exclusive package including: Additional images & videos Project criteria & details Local Routes & Site information Flora & Faunal information 3D CAD Topography Get competition files UNLIMITED - Lifetime Competition Access £20,000+ International Design Review Video Call Open to Students & Professionals See All Project Briefs UNLIMITED members receive exclusive lifetime access to ALL Larsen Liverpool content: competitions, premium content, site analysis, certificates of participation, and much more. + a free one-to-one design review video call. Larsen Liverpool have hosted an international design competition for architects, designers and students. Check out the winning design scheme here. SUSPENDED SLEEPING POD RETHINKING ARCHITECTURE. CREATING A PLATFORM FOR ARCHITECTS & STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR CREATIVITY 1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize Inspiration Gallery USE THIS PROJECT & SITE ANALYSIS FOR YOUR THESIS / UNIVERSITY / PROFESSIONAL PROJECT All of our project briefs and all resources can be used independently or as part of your educational and career progression. University Thesis | University Project | Portfolio Development | Professional Development | Extra-curricular activity No product Add to Cart THE BRIEF This design challenge asks for a 2-person sleeping pod that can be suspended on a cliff face or balance on a mountain ridge. The fully sustainable and self sufficient design should provide a comfortable, safe space to sleep 2 people and a dog. The design will provide a connection between humans and nature and considers its impact on the surroundings including construction, materiality, ecology and views. THE SITE Tavertet is a small mountain village at the top of the Guilleries Natural Park, nestled within the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees mountains. The Pre-Pyrenees consist of large groups of low, undulating mountains at the base of the much taller, much sharper Pyrenees, which create a natural border between Spain, France and Andorra. The village of Tavertet is extremely well taken care of by its (just over) 100 citizens. The older buildings are well preserved and the newer buildings pay tribute to the ancient architecture the village hosts. The Tavertet region is home to remains of a 12th century castle, and most of the town's historic centre was erected in the 17th and 18th centuries. The historic centre is now listed as a Site of Cultural Interest . 1st PRIZE HARMONÍA EN LAS ALTURAS O•REM Emanuele Cipolla, Raúl López Andrés, Manuel Splendore Instagram Winner Sau THE WINNING DESIGN SCHEME HARMONÍA EN LAS ALTURAS The project aims to create a closer and stronger relationship with the surrounding nature, where the harmony of all the parts in its context makes it unique among the Spanish mountains. The concept is centered around a suspended pod, which has been positioned to optimize solar energy usage and create an intimate connection with the Tavertet cliff. The orientation of the project is carefully considered to maximize energy efficiency. The utilization of amorphous solar panels on the roof and the integration of passive ventilation into the design, allows for the pod to operate with minimal environmental impact. The strategic placement of the pod also provides stunning views towards the landscape of Guilleries and Tavertet, further enriching the connection with the surrounding nature. The objective of the project is to recreate the forms that are inherent to the identity of the location, placing nature before human intervention. This will initiate a rediscovery process of the natural environment, which will result in not only benefiting nature but also enhancing the economic sustainability of Tavertet and its surrounding cities, with more responsible tourism. The unique shape of the pod is inspired by the barrel vaults of ancient structures, while its catenary form not only nods to the Catalan modernist architecture of Gaudí, but also serves a functional purpose. The shape facilitates the management of rainwater, collecting it in a collector beneath the floor, ensuring a constant availability of water. The project prioritizes sustainability, using locally sourced materials and incorporating a prefabrication and standardization approach. The construction process is efficient, requiring a single day to complete it, making the most of the materials present in the surrounding nature such as earth, stones, dry straw, and wood. The project presents a load-bearing structure made up of two main materials: wood and rammed earth. The two materials work together and at the same time have been contrasted to help balance the overhang and to create a philosophical contrast between ground connection and lightweight in the cantilever part. The design also emphasizes eco-sustainability, utilizing recycled polycarbonate materials. The project is grounded in a deep respect for nature, supported by six steel pillars that minimally impact the surrounding environment. The design aims to create a stronger bond between the pod and nature, providing a space for reflection and connection with the unspoiled beauty of the surrounding landscape. In addition to its environmental sustainability and its harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment, the design of the pod also prioritizes the comfort and well-being of its occupants. The orientation of the pod has been carefully considered to make the best use of solar energy, and the design incorporates passive ventilation, allowing for a comfortable and healthy living environment. In conclusion, the project is providing a sustainable, comfortable, and harmonious living environment that is intimately connected to the surrounding landscape and rich cultural heritage. It offers a space for reflection, connection with nature, and a sense of place, providing an unparalleled experience in one of the most beautiful regions of Spain. 2nd PRIZE 1st PRIZE Winner 2 THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SENSUAL Victor Migirov, Nil Marianov, Leonid Shvets Instagram 3rd PRIZE 3 prize CASITA EN LAS ESTRELLAS Lauren Mendoza, Logan Smith Available Projects & Site Analyses Quick View Cover Letter & CV Guides Regular Price £49.00 Sale Price £17.00 Add to Cart Quick View Career Accelerator Programme Resources Price £397.00 Add to Cart Quick View Eco-Village Mini Challenge Price £24.00 Add to Cart Quick View Past Competition Files Price £59.00 Add to Cart Quick View Unlimited Competitions Regular Price £299.00 Sale Price £199.00 Add to Cart Quick View Quarry Site Analysis Price £29.00 Add to Cart Quick View Quarry Biophilic Pavilion Competition Price £59.00 Add to Cart Quick View Quarry Regenerative Landscaping Competition Price £59.00 Add to Cart Quick View Quarry Concert Hall Competition Price £89.00 Add to Cart Quick View Quarry Competitions Price £189.00 Add to Cart Quick View Scandinavian Fjords Competitions Price £149.00 Add to Cart Quick View Scandinavian Fjords Site Analysis Price £29.00 Add to Cart Quick View Scandinavian Fjords Garden Escape Price £89.00 Add to Cart Quick View Scandinavian Fjords Floating Sauna Price £59.00 Add to Cart Quick View Empordà Agora - Eco Village Town Hall Price £79.00 Add to Cart Quick View Empordà Site Analysis Price £29.00 Add to Cart Quick View Empordà Competitions Price £189.00 Add to Cart Quick View Empordà Domus - Floating Eco House Price £49.00 Add to Cart Quick View Certificate of Participation Price £5.00 Add to Cart Quick View Empordà Polis - Self-Sustaining Eco Village Price £119.00 Add to Cart INSPIRATION GALLERY We are so proud of all the work submitted and the amount of thought given to each of the schemes. Recreating habitation for birds is a neccessary task. - When designing Birdwatching tower in Chester Meadow, we not only create an usual watching tower - which only serve the observing demand of people, we also propose a space for local birds - an intergrated space for the communication between human and birds - an idea of sustainable design for both human and the environment. - The mission of the design is to create a space that not only can impress the viewers but can also create a livable space for birds. 1. Current Status Advantages: Various and lively ecosystem: Wild birds, insects, flowers appear frequently all over the landscape) Construction site: On the tip of the meadow which have a wide and overall view of the local landscape (Old quater accross the river and wild environment on the South) The site is right next to the River Dee - The separate boundary between the wild environment and the urban area accross the river so the architecuture will become an intersection point between nature and human 2. Targets: Create a landmark for the landscape Create a suitable point for observing the beauty of local landscape Create a space where birds can interact freely and naturally with human so the tower will have full basic functions for birds : nesting, landing on. 3. Ideas: The cover is made of various combination of 1 solid birdnest module - which is replicated on verticle and horizontal structures. Modules are rotated in various directions and the density of the layer is different on different altitude which will create an interesting facade and also make various shape of voids for birds to interact in different ways. Experience route: A linear route penetrate through the construction to create various views and experiences. The route is designed with limited interation with the cover ( ensure safety for birds) Level 1 is desgined with a steep route for disabled people. 4. The efficiency of the proposal Modules are easy to produce and diassemble. THE COMPETITION BRIEF Challenge: to design a vernacular bird watching shelter and bird sanctuary in the unique setting of the Chester Meadows. How can humans occupy spaces that inspire harmony with the natural environment? What can we, as designers, do to accomplish this and create architecture that avoids destruction of the natural world while also benefitting our environmental impact? We now live in a world where architecture takes valuable resources and causes destruction of the natural environment. We are looking for a design scheme that builds a connection between humans and nature and gives back to our natural surroundings, rather than only taking from them. Our brief asks for an innovative and creative design focusing on the user experience and connection to the surrounding nature and wildlife with a minimal environmental impact. The challenge is to create a sustainable and a 100% natural structure that sits peacefully within the meadows and allows both humans and birds to share the same space. The shelter should provide a calm, reflective space for city dwellers to temporarily leave their hectic city lives to reconnect and interact with nature. It also asks for a sanctuary for the native and passing birds of the area. The sanctuary should be a place for birds to take shelter and encourage breeding, with some consideration for the various roosting and dietary needs of differing species. THE COMPETITION SITE The Earl's Eye Meadows are a protected grassland and wetland and are home to a number of different species of plants and wildlife. The site has a number of constrains and opportunities that make this a particularly interesting and provocative design challenge; including beautiful scenery, proximity to the River Dee, flood risks and natural surface water. There are many walking routes already visible throughout the meadows as this is a popular area for nature trails and dog walking. The area contains historic wells and there is ample opportunity for extraction of the natural surface water for drinking. The River Dee is a fundamental and interesting feature of the area, with water sports and other activities happening around the site. We encourage designers to include this within their design and consider the continual floor risk of the meadows. The city of Chester is one of the most architecturally-rich in the UK. Some examples of its breath-taking architecture can be seen at the roman ruins and wall, Chester Cathedral, Chester Town Hall and the historic houses along Dee Banks road. Public Favourite MINI CHALLENGE WINNER AERBORETUM by team Fearon van Rijsbergen Introduction It is remarkable that the Chester Meadows are as we find them today. All spaces decline with imbalance, an imbalance that is usually created by humans. We tend to consume and destroy our surroundings. The Meadows are now in a precarious dynamic balance thanks to forceful action by a small group, an association formed by a few residents in the 1980s - Friends of the Meadows. However, now it is time to build on past gains and create more permanent ways of holding that balance. Design Strategy The brief was clear, a shared space for birds and humans. However, those two user types don't always mix, especially if you're a bird, hyper-alert to danger when foraging for food on the ground. Therefore, the aim was to create a space, shared, but at a distance, where humans could observe and take time out from the city, and birds would be at ease getting what they need. The elevated water baths are set at a distance from the main structure, allowing for the observers on the first level to look down from their contemplative spots and see the birds in action. The water baths could be filled manually, or rainwater from a downpipe running off the lower roof. The same strategy is employed for the bird feeders, which are strung at angles from the lower roof. The argument is that the birds will become familiar with the structure and associate it with food, water, and shelter. There are various vantage points for the human user who may be taking shelter from rainy weather in the inner part of the tower or standing from the first floor viewing the surroundings. They could also be on the ground level catching glimpses of birds scavenging in the grass. The form of the tower has been exaggerated to allow nature to reclaim it, encouraging vegetation to grow around the posts and other areas. The eaves are deep with ledges on the underside so that birds can find suitable places to nest. Structure and Materials Post and beam construction is a fitting option when considering the history of Chester, evident in the existing buildings built throughout the 1600s and in subsequent imitations. Structurally, it is load bearing and additional interventions will not be required. This is in keeping with the 100% sustainable approach required by the brief. Reclaimed wood will be used for the beams and sheathing. Oak could also be a sustainable choice. Natural slate tiles are to cover the roof and the base is optional but might be useful during floods. To Summarise The brief for this challenge asked how humans can occupy spaces that inspire harmony with the natural environment. The work of the Friends of the Meadows restored the precarious balance between natural and human occupation of the space. This design makes manifest an enduring structure that embodies that balance, one designed to support the growth of the natural environment around it – and perhaps eventually to disappear into it. Lauren Fearon, Nicola van Rijsbergen PUBLIC FAVOURITE The Nest Chin Min Zhe Introduction Chester meadow is full of lush greeneries that provide a peaceful place for the people and birds to dwell in. Hence, the approach we have decided on right at the start of the project is an intervention that coexists, or even enhances the existence of the natural environment on site. The site is frequented by joggers and people who were taking a breather from the hectic lifestyle. Adjacent to the site is River Dee, which provides scenic views as well as water activities such as kayaking. Thus, the site has a unique identity that should be respected. Design process Upon conducting site studies, we produced 3 design studies: 1. A conventional bird watching tower that maximises its function as an observatory, but was deemed intrusive. 2. A structure that coexists with nature. However, tall structures interfere with the spirit of the site. 3. A design with minimal impact on nature, which appears like an extension of nature instead of a forceful intervention. Form inspiration: branching out The form takes inspiration from our intention that it should be grown from the site instead of an insertion. Hence, this form is a metaphor of horizontally grown roots from the existing tree; they intertwine to form an entrance to serve as an invitation statement to bridge the human and natural environment. Spatial experience and Chester architecture Chester architecture features ‘the row’, which is an intermediate space that connects people on the street to the retail shops. We re-interpreted this spatial experience and crafted the space of ‘The Nest’. ‘The Nest’ consists of 3 layers of spatial zones: the exterior, intermediate and interior. The journey through those spaces is curated to be a gradual transition from the outside world into the realm of natural wonder. At the innermost space, we have allocated pockets of spaces made with split bamboo where the birds dwell in due to the resemblance to the tree branches. One could have a glance of the intimate living of the bird through the peep holes designed. Construction technique The only material used is bamboo, fixed in place by ropes. A 40-50mm-diameter bamboo culm is split into 5-6 pieces to be used to form an organic and porous enclosure. The structural base consists of rows of full-culm bamboo bundled together as a raft component. When flood comes, the property of bamboo provides buoyancy to the structure to adjust its position according to the water level. In addition, the roof is made up of flatten bamboo panels interlocked to provide shelter over the seating space. Sustainable cycle: ‘Architecture as a living organism’ The design has a sustainable life cycle, such that it could be buried underground for decomposition upon disposal. It produces minerals, nitrogen and carbon dioxide gases into the atmosphere to be captured by organisms and plants subsequently. In short, this piece of architecture is designed to be a living organism. The structure is grown from the earth; it returns back to the earth upon disposal, and contributes to the subsequent life cycle. Congratulations! THE NEST has been voted the public favourite. Your design and attention to the brief has stood out for their consideration of the characteristics and needs of the Chester Meadows, and for providing fantastic solutions both for bird-watching and a bird sanctuary within this special area. Hi! 👋 My name is Ryan, creator of Larsen Architecture and this Professional Development Programme . I am a practicing, Chartered Architect and a Registered Interior Designer. I have always felt that there is a disconnect between what we learn to be successful designers and the essential skills needed to run a successful design business. I feel that the 'one-size-fits-all' approach to design education is outdated and we should be focused on unique solutions that allow designers to celebrate and share their individual talents, fostering creativity, better design and pushing the industry forward; and so, I created this programme. More About Us Click the videos above to play Why did we create this programme? The Science behind what we do At the heart of our programme is Insights Discovery; a globally recognised psychometric tool that helps you understand your personality, your communication style, and how you naturally show up in the world. But more importantly, it helps you connect. Understanding how you work is the first step to running a business that feels aligned understanding how others work. That’s how you build a brand that resonates deeply, communicates with clarity, and draws in your dream clients - the ones who truly value what you do. This is where Marc comes in. As a psychologist and communication specialist, Marc brings the depth, structure, and emotional intelligence that elevates this programme far beyond a business course. His guidance helps you understand not just your strategy, but your style; how you lead, how you listen, how you respond, and how to create meaningful, lasting connections with the people you’re here to serve. Because business is personal. If you don’t know how to connect with others, or communicate who you really are, you will never be able to demonstrate your value to your ideal client. This isn’t about boxing you into a colour or a type. It’s about giving you the insight and language to confidently show up as yourself, build trust with your audience, and position yourself as the only choice in a crowded market. This is the difference between sounding “professional” and being genuinely powerful in how you communicate. Our entire programme, from Discovery to Implementation, is designed with this psychology in mind. We don’t just help you build a business. We help you understand yourself, your clients, and the people around you — so your business feels like a natural extension of who you are. And when that happens, the right clients feel it too. Click on the images above to read more In order to help you learn and implement the above, we utilise coaching methods and a series of resources that are scientifically proven to be impactful in your self-development journey: Personalised one-to-one coaching and mentoring Guidance through project development High-impact communication to sell/market your brand’s identity to potential clients or employers Self-directed learning to fit around your work and any study commitments Spaced repetition helps solidify knowledge successfully and helps build a picture of this self-development journey Continuous refinement through specific, focussed feedback If you are ready to take action towards your future, book a call with us so we can walk you through the process. We are engaged in architecture, landscape, interior and renovation, trying to explore the relationship between site, space and material details through the observation of surrounding and everyday practice. Opening the "door" you see the outside world, and/or explore the space inside. We hope to use design as a way to open the door of life, discover more interesting things, and create some beautiful details. instagram: @ nnmplus website: nnmplus.com Winner Sau THE BRIEF Considering the current environmental crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic that we are experiencing globally, it is important that we use our expertise as designers to create considerate and thoughtful sustainable architecture that feeds and nourishes both the earth and us as people. With this in mind, we are asking for applicants to design a piece of vernacular architecture that will be environmentally conscious with a minimal carbon footprint. It should set an example for how architecture can work with the surrounding landscape and benefit areas such as this protected natural park. The idea is to provide an architectural beacon for the area that will attract short stay visitors and act as a gathering point. The building should also provide a space for meditation and reflection for visitors and the local community to come and step out of their everyday troubles, with a close connection to the surrounding nature and scenery. THE SITE El Pantà de Sau is one of the most prominent features of its kind across the whole of Spain and home to the oldest underwater church in the world. The valley in which it lies was home to the small village of Sant Romà de Sau which is now submerged beneath the reservoir, apart from the Church steeple, which is still visible when the water level is low. The reservoir is one of many that provides water for Catalonia’s Capital city, Barcelona and is therefore of huge importance to the area. The reservoir sits within Les Guilleries national park, a protected area spread across 8,300 hectares of the pre-Pyrenees within central Catalonia. Its mountainous landscape is made up of tree topped undulating mountains and dramatic sheer cliff edges. Steeped in nature, activities and rich history, the area has become a haven for the people of Catalonia and visitors to the region. THE DESIGN SCHEME La Cathédrale Engloutie Route towards the Church We can only imagine the possible improper satisfaction of the authority when the little sacrifice of the Sant Romà de Sau, a remote historical town sitting among the mountains, whose remains now underneath the water, nowadays gradually turns into a tourist spot. It is chosen to be flooded for an infrastructure project to supply water for the cities of the grandiose Barcelona. The contemporary heavily social-media dependent tourism asks for great angles for photo taking, and who would say that the tower of a well-aged church above the water surface would not make a great scene. Despite the stunning view, our attitude remains that this is a beautiful scar. People do understand in the great course of development, sacrifices are sometimes necessary. But the negligence and justification with the tool of entertainment can be more tragic than the sacrifice itself. We want the scar to remain a scar, to retrieve the historical meaning of the site with the colour of repentance and reflection. The retrieval is made possible by creating a narrative with a few elements. Viewing from above, we see two straight lines. One extending from the woods on the existing path from the parking lot, the other points directly to the tower of the old church. As the reservoir has become increasingly more fun based, our purpose is to construct a direct and undisturbed route from the parking lot to the scene of the church, creating a series of scenes on the way. Scene 1: the wall The journey begins at the parking lot. After parking, visitors walk through a small woods to see a long wall beside the path. Carved on it would be the whole history of Sant Romà de Sau, a thousand years of it. Visitors follow the history on the wall and eventually find themselves in front of a door where the whole story ends: right before the decision of building the dam. Scene 2: the path Behind the door is a straight path. Visitors carry on their journey by going past the door toward the “tomb stone”: a thirty meters tall rectangle that stands at the end of the path. The road is carved into the ground, leading the visitors directly to the entrance. Scene 3: the entrance At the end of the path is the stairs leading to the door. As the ground floor of the watch tower is beneath the water, it is designed that visitors will stare at the scene beneath the water while entering. We want to create an image of suffocation by leading people under the water. Scene 4: the stairs After entering the door, the visitors will be surprised to find out that the “tomb stone” is actually a triangular building with an opening pointing at the old church. They will start climbing up while this connection becomes increasingly clear. This journey from the bottom of the water to the skylight above is a repentant journey for them to experience what’s been buried underneath. Scene 5: the deck Guilty is not the feeling we are looking for. Reflection is far more subtle and sincere. After climbing to the top, visitors will have a view over the reservoir, the tip of the tower and the other buildings on the other side of the water. Right above them is a pyramid symbolising the reversed roof of the church tower. People are welcomed to stay here for a little while to rest and to think. The trouble of constructing such a building is that it usually requires more solemn materials like concrete. But as is known, concrete can unleash tons of greenhouse gas during construction. The challenge is to use a material that is both environmental friendly and solemn. Our solution is to use the carbonised surface wood. The wood boards are smoked by fire, creating a deep dark surface that would suit the atmosphere we are looking for. It is also a rot-resisting and water-proof material. - Tavertet Cliff-Edge Hotel Winners
Larsen Liverpool have hosted an international design competition for architects, designers and students. Check out the winning design scheme here. TAVERTET CLIFF-EDGE HOTEL RETHINKING ARCHITECTURE. University Thesis | University Project | Portfolio Development | Professional Development | Extra-curricular activity No product Add to Cart THE BRIEF This design challenge asks for an inspiring sustainable hotel that will sit high in the Pre-Pyrenees mountains gazing across the dramatic landscape within the Les Guilleries natural park, Catalonia. The challenge is to create a sustainable, environmentally conscious structure, or set of structures that sit peacefully, teetering at the edge of the cliffs, providing an emotive experience for visitors. The design should take its inspiration from the natural setting and connect with its surroundings, allowing visitors to have an immersive experience, both inside and outside of the hotel, of the dramatic scenery and wildlife that surrounds them. 1st PRIZE SETSUZOKU 101 Design Studio Usman Haider , Hossam Anwar , Ammara Majeed Winner Sau THE WINNING DESIGN SCHEME SETSUZOKU Design Process Using the natural environment, we have kept the topography in mind in order to create an urban scape which gels in with the cliff. As to the design schemes light was kept as a crucial factor in deciding shapes and natural light slits all over the design scheme. An architectural statement was considered for the current times allowing people to view the meditation space, A stone monolith with peeking light voids stands as a giant reflection plane bringing in a stark presence yet camouflaged with the environment. A ramp leads users on a journey from the entrance wing, which hosts a restaurant serving users with local cuisine and the option to cater locally picked fruits and mushrooms by the guest. Underneath that built surface is a cantilevered pool jutting out of the cliff overlooking the valley. The ramp envelopes an open landscape region which serves as an auditorium for communal events and produces internal pockets with BBQ spaces for the guests. Guest suites are placed on increasing levels with the cliff topography with half units on the cliff and half of them built into the mountain, accessible via the landscape area and ramp. A voyage on its own at the end the cantilevered Rupu, serves as the climax of the site, where users can ascend their view and take in the grandeur of the valley, the environment before them. Materials Beams and posts using a hybrid of reclaimed wood and locally enabled steel structures are used in the hotel promoting the reuse of material and generation of raw materials from nearby surroundings rather than sourcing them from outside. Sub Mediterranean Oak & Pine will be the primary source of reclaiming materials. In humid scenarios local mushroom population will be primed to be used for Mycellium cladding on the surfaces allowing guests to add to the identity of the hotel on their trail pickings. Summary The environment on site asked for a hybrid-built intervention that respects both mother nature and the user coming into the site. The Setsuzoku enables us to create that connection between what was and what would be. A sustainable approach to a simple concept of Connection. 2nd PRIZE 1st PRIZE Winner 2 INNERMOST Ngo Duc Hieu, Nguyen Phuc Vinh, Chu Minh Duc Public Favourite THE PUBLIC FAVOURITE To vote for the title of Public Favourite, please click on the link below.
